PAST NEWS & EVENTS:
The Elizabethan Bath Project
Concordia's University Department of Theatre proudly presents its 2009-2010 season opener, The Elizabethan Bath Project, written and directed by Paul Hopkins. The Elizabethan Bath Project plays at the Cazalet Studio from Oct. 22 to 25, 2009, and tours to other Concordia University spaces from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.
Using an adaptation of Shakespeare's War of the Roses tetralogy, writer and director Paul Hopkins has condensed twelve hours of Shakespeare's greatest history plays into three hours of action-packed theatre spread over two nights. The Elizabethan Bath Project replicates and explores the conditions under which an Elizabethan acting troupe would have rehearsed and performed. By creating a tour, where the production will move to various public spaces during the second week of its run, Hopkins has created challenging performance conditions that are not dissimilar to a modern acting career where an actor's self-reliance is key. Hopkins hopes that through the touring process, students will gain confidence from taking charge of their craft, rather than relying on the director for more than technical direction.
Part 1 - Henry IV: Having deposed Richard II, Henry Bolingbrook adopts a kingdom fraught with dissension and an heir apparent that seems more interested in playing pranks than accepting his role as the future King of England. (Adapted from the text of William Shakespeare's Richard II, Henry IV part 1, and Henry IV Part 2.)
Part 2 - Henry V: The King of England, formerly known as Hal, defies expectation and rallies a nation to war. (Adapted from the text of William Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 2 and Henry V.)
