After graduating with honours from Concordia University's Scenography program in 1988, Raymond Marius Boucher started
his career doing numerous assistantships, helping set designers in
Montreal and at the Stratford Theatre Festival. Since then, he has
designed sets for over eighty theatrical productions and various dance,
cinema and exhibition designs for museums. Directors rejoiced at his
original approach to theatrical spaces. To name but a few of the most
memorable; Paula de Vasconcelos' Savage Love, Alice Ronfard's Cyrano de Bergerac, Andre Brassard's Les Émigrés as well as Denise Filiatrault's My Fair Lady.
Boucher has been nominated four times since 1995 by the Quebec Theatre Academy for Claude Poissant's Le Triomphe de l'amour (Espace Go), Lorraine Pintal's Hedda Gabler (TNM) and Benoit Vermeulen's Au moment de sa disparition and Romances et karaoké
(Theatre Le Clou), and his work has traveled nationally and
internationally: Czech Republic, France, Italy, Mexico, Portugal,
Russia, Spain and Sweden.
Other achievements include a world dance premiere with the Ballet Jazz de Montreal's Tristan Iseult, assistant artistic director to Ben Van Os on The Baronness and the Pig, a film by Micheal Mackenzie and all sets for Celine Dion's television special The Color of my Love.
Boucher started teaching at Concordia University in 2002 and shortly
thereafter became the coordinator of the Design for the Theatre
program. Part of his notable achievements is the incredible student
delegation he led for the Prague Quadrennial in the summers
of 2003 and 2007. These initiatives permitted his students to meet a
fabulous international panel of theatre students and professionals and
to exhibit their own work in an international setting. He designed the
exhibit presenting the Canadian designers and schools and received a
Special Honorary Mention given by the Council of the Prague Quadrennial
'03 at the recommendation of the International Jury PQ'03 Awards to the
Canada Theatre exhibit for its clarity of vision and national spirit.
Teaching a full load of design for the theatre courses, he is also very
active in the community and takes on challenging new projects. Boucher is now the new president of l'Association des Professionnels des Arts de la Scène du
Québec which studies, defends and develops economical, social, moral
and professional interests of its members along with the promotion and
the diffusion of Québec scenography.
